🎯 Goal Savings

Monthly SIP or lump sum needed to reach a target amount.

The Goal Savings calculator works out how much you need to save — either as a lump sum today or as a monthly SIP (systematic investment) — to hit a specific financial target by a future date. It's the tool to use for any fixed-cost goal: a wedding, a home down payment, a child's education fund, or a big purchase.

The calculator uses the future value of an annuity formula to solve for the required monthly contribution:

FV = P × [(1 + r)n − 1) / r]

where FV is your target amount, P is the monthly payment being solved for, r is the monthly rate of return, and n is the number of months. If you're starting with an existing lump sum, that amount is grown forward at the same rate (the same compound math powers Investment Growth) and subtracted from the target before solving for the remaining monthly contribution.

Say you want 10,00,000 in 5 years, expect a 10% annual return (≈0.83% monthly), and currently have 50,000 saved. The calculator grows your 50,000 forward, finds the shortfall, and tells you the monthly SIP needed to close the gap — typically working out to roughly 11,900/month in this scenario.

People often use an overly optimistic return rate for a short time horizon, or forget to adjust the target for inflation if the goal is years away. For goals under 3 years, a lower, more conservative return assumption is safer since there's less time to recover from market dips.

What it does

Works backward from a target amount to tell you what to invest each month (or as a lump sum today) to get there at a chosen return.

When to use it

Use it for any specific future need: a house down payment, a child's education, a big purchase, or a fund you want to build by a target date.

Assumptions
  • Your rate of return is fixed every year; real returns will vary.
  • SIP contributions are made at the start of each month.
  • No withdrawals during the accumulation period.

Pro tip

Start today: investing a smaller amount earlier usually beats a larger amount later. If the required SIP is more than your budget, extend the horizon, lower the target, or accept a slightly higher expected return before cutting savings.
